I decided to write about a show watched last night and an anime watched this morning.
The show last night was "De lovely" the story of Cole Porter. the movie does not go in to his childhood but follows his years with Linda Lee. /the woman that loved him and he loved her. It was a sad and complicated story of how many of Hollywood's' leading men were protected either by close friends, "wives" and the studios. I do not understand why it was such a scandal for them to be homosexual or even bisexual. As long as the partners were two consenting adults I see no problem with it. In the beginning when Linda and Cole decide to wed her ex husband tries to come and re claim her, threatening to tell the world of his attraction for guys. The reaction of Linda and Cole to this threat is totally unexpected by her 'ex husband, and I think the audience of the time. In the end Cole becomes a sad and lonely man after Linda's death from what we now call COPD. Even though she tried to set him up with a protecting friend, it failed. Cole sends both his best and dearest friends and Dave away so that he can wallow in the sadness of his loss of Linda and the amputation of his leg below the knee. Even when fitted with a prosthetic he felt that he was no longer the man he has been a isolated himself from 1958 until his death in 1964. Not many people knew of the effect of his despair over the loss of his limb.
He moved into an apartment in the Waldorf Astoria hotel and it was there that he died of kidney failure at the age of 73.
The movie is told in vignettes of his life that he is watching with the "producer " of the show.
Mirai
This morning I was looking for something to watch and I spotted this anime. It said it was the story of how a 4 year old boy distraught over the arrival o his baby sister learns to be a big brother.
Kun, is 4 years old and when his mom and dad return with the new baby his entire world seems to be turned on end. One day after, causing her to cry he is scolded and he storms out into the yard. The tree in the yard shimmers and across the lawn appears a man. The man berates Kun saying that he is the usurper, that before he came I has the best food, went on the best walks and had their undivided attention. It is the family dog and this is the first hint that Kun will learn from family members past and future to be a big brother. His grown up sister is the next visitor and together they plot to return the emperor and empress dolls to their box until Mirai's next birthday. They are successful with the help of human dog and Kun distracting dad. Poor dad, he is so in over his head to be the at home parent, he feels overwhelmed and at one point falls asleep at his computer while trying to work.
The mom is torn over going back to work and staying home that causes tension with the parents, and Kun's demands for attention do not help. There re lots of temper tantrums in the show. One over learning to ride his newly acquired bicycle, they are at the park and Kun wants to ride like the big boys so dad tales off the training wheels but it is not as easy as it seems and Kun has a massive breakdown when dad has to return to get a crying Mirai. At home he says he'll never ride that bike again and throws down his helmet, triggering anther "dream". In this one his great grandfather teaches him about courage and patience while riding a horse and a motorcycle. the next day when they got to the park Kun tries and tries to ride his bike until he is successful and rides home with his friends.
other instances are a visit to his mom when she was a small girl to discover that the neat and efficient mom was once a little hellion that was often scolded and did bad things. He saw how his dad was a sickly boy that was always unsure of his self. but the biggest lesson was when he ran away from home. Kun hid in a closet and in the dream awoke to find they parents and Mirai had left to go camping without him . He had refused to go because he wanted the yellow pants and dad in his frustration put the blue pants on Kun, making him double angry
He walks to a train stop and meets his older self who berates him and tells him that it was silly to run away because of the color of his pants but when the train arrives and older Kun says he should not get on he does anyway and rides the train all the way to the end of the line in Tokyo . Once there he realizes he has no way back home, when he tries to get help from the lost and found he can't tell them anything about himself and is then sent to the train of lost souls, never to return. As he is waiting he sees Mirai also being put on the train and he rescues her. Next he is in the future and he sees his older self and Mirai interact. She tells him that he needs to return to his time and they do taking a journey through the past. In the end of course he , wakes up to see his sister playing in the playroom while his mom and dad pack the car, Everything is fine.
